The radio opertators run these stations and you are welcome to have a go yourself, sending and receiving messages to/from other stations around the world - particularly Scout Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) stations. The stations run throughout the day and you can just turn up and stay as long as you like.
Voices on HF radio sound very different to broadcast quality (e.g. BBC Radio). You need to listen carefully so your ear and brain 'tune-in'. Learning a little about the codes and procedures makes listening more fun too.
